About the artist
Krzysztof Leon Dziemaszkiewicz was born in 1963 in Lipiany, Poland. Performer, choreographer, creator of images and objects (specifically taping art). He spent the years of his happy childhood and youth in Pyrzyce in western Poland, in the so-called Recovered Territories. He comes from a working-class family that arrived from the Eastern Borderlands (Kresy) after the end of the Second World War. After graduating from high school in 1982, he began studying at the University of Gdańsk at the Faculty of Production Economics. Since studying was the only alternative to avoid being conscripted into the Polish Army, he turned out not to be interested in academics. He actively participated in academic cultural life (Teatr Warunkowy, first spontaneous solo performance actions). In the years 1989-1996, he co-created Wojciech Misiuro's auteur Expression Theatre in the Tri-City (dance, choreography), taking an active part in all premieres, television productions, and artistic travels. In 1995, he founded the independent Theatre Patrz Mi na Usta (Look at My Lips), which operates simultaneously in Gdańsk/Sopot and Berlin, where he has been living since 1996. Since 1992, he has been an active member of the Sopot Foundation of Science, Culture and Art SFINKS. He is the author of many choreographies, original performances, and solo live acts. Since 2004, he has actively participated in the cultural life of the Tri-City, co-creating the so-called underground while remaining an independent artist. He is also active on many other levels, working with artists from various artistic disciplines.
The trans-genic, trans-sexual work of Dziemaszkiewicz aims to combine opposites, raising questions about the boundaries between animality and humanity. His work reaches for premonitions, instincts, and emotions. The overriding principle is honesty. Frequently used nudity is a manifestation of joy, naturalness, and spontaneity. Uncompromising attitude towards social limitations creates a unique language of artistic expression. The creator is who he wants to create himself to be, in the name of the freedom of every human individual. Dziemaszkiewicz's art has been presented in many galleries, clubs, theatres, and at festivals in Europe, North America, South America, and Asia.
