Aleksandra Kubiak

Aleksandra Kubiak (born 1978 in Lubań) is a visual artist, creator of performances, films, and spatial forms. In her works, she examines the social effectiveness of art. In the years 2001–2013, she co-founded the Sędzia Główny (Chief Judge) Group with Karolina Wiktor. In 2010 Kubiak resumed her solo career, creating the film "Dolce Vita" (2011). She is a two-time recipient of scholarships from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland. With the Sędzia Główny Group, she was nominated for the Paszporty Polityki (2011) and Views (2007) awards; the artists won the International Performance Competition in Trento, Italy (2007) and the TVP Kultura Award (2005). Solo works by Kubiak and the Sędzia Główny Group have been presented in major galleries and museums in Poland and worldwide. They are in the collections of the National Museum in Warsaw, the Zachęta National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Art in Łódź, the Signum Foundation in Poznań, and many private deposits and collections.

Since 2014 Aleksandra Kubiak has been working on an autobiographical cycle of works, in which she combines often difficult family experiences with experiments in the field of filmmaking, at the intersection of performance, documentary film, and theater. She works with actors, writes screenplays and texts, and directs. The cycle includes, among others, the films "You're beautiful, Doll" with actress Elżbieta Lisowska-Kopeć, "Elephant Meat" with Monika Buchowiec, actress of the Kazimierz Dejmek New Theater in Łódź, and "Live, you silly!" with Artur Beling. In 2016 Kubiak defended her doctoral degree in art under the supervision of Prof. Izabella Gustowska, in collaboration with Prof. Marek Wasilewski, at the University of Arts in Poznań. Since 2017 she has been working at the Institute of Visual Arts at the University of Zielona Góra. Kubiak lives in Zielona Góra, where she collaborates with the Salony Foundation and the BWA Gallery.
