Krzysztof Knittel

Composer, co-creator of many improvised music groups: KEW (1974-76), group of composers, independent electroacoustic music studio (1982-84), freight train (from 1986), European Improvisation Orchestra (1996-98), CH & K & K trio (since 1999), Cavaliers of mud (since 2003). Born in 1947 in Warsaw, he studied at the State Higher School of Music. F. Chopin also in Warsaw in the direction of sound engineering and composition, conducting and theory of musical departments. From 1973, he cooperated with the Experimental Studio of the Polish Radio. In 1978, he worked at the Center for Creative and Performing Arts in Buffalo, USA.

He writes orchestral, choral and chamber works, plays live music and electroacoustic music, he composes for the needs of ballet, film theater and creates sound installations. As a composer and performer of his music, he performed in most European countries, in Asia as well as in North and South America. His discography includes over 50 albums. During martial law he was active in independent cultural environments. After 1989, he co-founded the „Audio-Art” festival, was the director of the Warsaw Autumn festival, and created the Ad Libitum festival. He was the president of the Polish Composers’ Union in 1999-2003 and in 2005-2017 he chaired the Polish Music Council. He is a member of the board of the Polish Music Council. He is a retired professor at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, he also lectured at music academies in Krakow and Lodz. In 1985 he received the Solidarity award, in 1998 he was awarded by the Foundation for Contemporary Art in New York, and he was also awarded the Cyprian Norwid’s prize, Silver Medal „Gloria Artis” and the prize of the Polish Composers’ Union.

Kompozytor, współtwórca wielu grup muzyki improwizowanej: Grupy Kompozytorskiej KEW (1974-76), Niezależnego Studia Muzyki Elektroakustycznej (1982-84), Pociągu Towarowego (od 1986), European Improvisation Orchestra (1996-98), tria CH&K&K (od 1999), Kawalerowie błotni (od 2003). Urodzony w 1947 roku w Warszawie, studiował w Państwowej Wyższej Szkole Muzycznej im. F. Chopina w Warszawie na wydziałach Reżyserii Dźwięku oraz Kompozycji, Dyrygentury i Teorii Muzyki. Od 1973 współpracował ze Studiem Eksperymentalnym Polskiego Radia. W 1978 pracował w The Center of the Creative and Performing Arts w Buffalo, USA.
Pisze utwory orkiestrowe, chóralne, kameralne, gra muzyke komputerową i elektroakustyczną na żywo, komponuje dla baletu, teatru filmu, tworzy instalacje dźwiękowe. Jako kompozytor i wykonawca swojej muzyki koncertował w większości krajów europejskich, w Azji, w Ameryce Północnej i Południowej. Jego dyskografia obejmuje ponad 50 płyt. W stanie wojennym działał w środowiskach kultury niezależnej. Po 1989 roku współtworzył festiwal „Audio-Art”, był dyrektorem festiwalu Warszawska Jesień, utworzył festwal Ad Libitum. Był prezesem Związku Kompozytorów Polskich w latach 1999-2003, od 2005 do 2017 przewodniczył Polskiej Radzie Muzycznej. Jest członkien zarządu Polskiej Rady Muzycznej. Jest profesorem emerytowanym Uniwersytetu Muzycznego Fryderyka Chopina w Warszawie, wykładał także w akademiach muzycznych w Krakowie i w Łodzi. W 1985 otrzymał nagrode „Solidarności”, w 1998 został nagrodzony przez Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts w Nowym Jorku, otrzymał też nagrode im. Cypriana Norwida, Srebrny Medal „Gloria Artis” oraz nagrode Związku Kompozytorów Polskich.
