He was born in 1951 in Los Angeles. At the age of 3, he started playing percussion instruments, he built his first drum kit when he was 6, and he performed professionally at the age of twelve. In the 1960s he was active in garage bands in Los Angeles. He studied fine arts and poetry. From the end of the 1960s, he studied the rhythmic structures and percussion music of Ghana (Ewe people), South India (Tala) and Bali (Gamelan). In the 1970s, he was one of the founders of the cultural movement known as "industrial" - organizing poetry evenings, performances and, since 1977, performing with solo concerts. He entered the industrial context as perhaps the most charismatic shaman of the industrial era - a lonely drummer, using a peculiar set of ethnic instruments and industrial waste. Z'EV has performed in many countries and at prestigious festivals - in Europe, America and Japan. He created multimedia works combining music, performance, video and theater. He collaborated with theaters and artists and groups such as: Glenn Branca, Chris Watson (ex Cabaret Voltaire), Charlemagne Palestine, Fennesz, Genesis P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle / Psychic TV), Stephen O'Malley, Oren Ambarchi , Merzbow, KK Null or HATI. Z'EV is the author of several dozen publications - from articles and books (an important item is Rhythmajik. Practical Uses of Number, Rhythm and Sound; Z'EV also deals with the translation of Hebrew texts into English, he is also an expert on Kabbalah), through analogue cassettes and records - for CDs. Z'EV is both a musician, composer and theorist. His ideas are an absolute departure from the Western rhythmic language, from forms developed in the 20th century through jazz, rock and even academic avant-garde music. This artist can be safely considered one of the most outstanding and original contemporary percussionists.
